Projects and Actions

Intervention Projects:

Safe Drinking Water Scheme - Many vulnerable people in the villages and surrounding towns where SFM's farm is located do not have access to safe drinking water. SFM aims to distribute Water Purification Kits to schools, orphanages, hospital, clinics, domestic homes. The kit will kill 99.9% of harmful bacteria and cysts that are responsible for life-threatening diarrhoeal disease, including E-Coli, Cholera, Typhoid, Shigella, Klebsiella, Cryptosporidium and Giardia. The Static Kit can filter up to 150 litres per day if used continuously over 15 hours. Sponsor a kit with £27.

Food Support Scheme - the scourge of chronic hunger is high in Nigeria and it is especially severe among vulnerable people. The local parlance for chronic hunger is 0-1-0, that is, no breakfast, eat anything you can find in the afternoon and go to bed without supper. SFM has been running this scheme since 2006 and 130 families of widows and disabled have benefited from it. Sponsor this scheme with £25 or 'Feed the hungry on your birthday'.

Social Enterprise Projects:

Mechanised farming project - Some of the effects of urban migration is that the average age of farmers is 50 years, they engage in subsistence farming and most youths lack the skills to farm and contribute to food security in Nigeria. SFM will train youths to use tractors and maintain them to grow food/cash crops and enhance agricultural productivity. Sponsor training in mechanized farming for youths with £100.

Crop Storage Project - High post-harvest loss exacerbates the scourge of chronic hunger in Nigeria. Most farmer lose 70 percent of crops due to poor crop handling system and lack of storage facilities. Farmers told us that they are doomed when they have a good or bad harvest as they do not have a good return for their labour due to market glut or drought. Sponsor training in crop handling and storage with £70.

Food Processing and Packaging Project - The cost of establishing cottage industries are beyond the means of farmers. SFM aims to establish cassava cottage industry and storage facility on its demonstration farm for farmers to use collectively. Sponsor training in food processing and packaging with £70.

Fish farming Project - The children of vulnerable people (widows, disabled, orphans, youths from poor families) suffer from malnutrition because of lack of protein in their diet. Fish is good source of protein but it is priced out of their reach. Sponsor training in fish farming with £80.

Poultry and Animal Husbandry Project - The children of vulnerable people (widows, disabled, orphans, youths from poor families) suffer from malnutrition because of lack of protein in their diet. Meat is good source of protein but it is priced out of their reach. Sponsor training in poultry and animal husbandry with £70.

Beads and Silver Jewellery Project - Many vulnerable people are not employable because they lack education and are not able to run a successful business because they lack the skills. Sponsor training in the use of coconut shells to make jewellery with £50.

Business Advice and Cooperative System - SFM trainees will receive business advice in agribusiness including distribution and marketing of farm produce. They will be empowered to set up their own business through a cooperative system. Sponsor this project with £50.
